Mayoral Fund lends its hand to Durbanville Children’s Home

11 June 2025

One of the oldest children’s homes in South Africa, the Durbanville Children’s Home, benefitted from a R150 000 donation from the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Fund during a fundraising event held at Eensgezind Function Venue on Saturday, 31 May 2025. The Durbanville Children’s Home is home to 144 children, aged between 2 and 18 years from the broader area, informal settlements, farms and rural surrounds.

‘We extend our heartfelt thanks to the City of Cape Town for their generous donation of R150 000 towards Durbanville Children's Home. We are truly grateful, as this funding will go a long way in helping us provide for the basic needs of the children in our care. We deeply appreciate the City’s continued support of our mission and vision to create a safe, nurturing environment where every child can thrive. This support empowers us to bring hope, stability and opportunity to vulnerable children in our community,’ said the manager of Durbanville Children’s Home, Johanna Strauss.

‘It was a great honour to hand over this generous donation on behalf of the Mayor. This charitable cause supports the City’s strategic objectives as set out in its Integrated Development Plan and will ensure that this children’s home can continue to support vulnerable children. These children are spared exposure to drug abuse, gang violence, poverty, crime and other social ills. As a City of Hope we can only hope for the very best for our children’s futures. I would also like to thank the residents of Durbanville who support the home,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.

The City receives regular requests for relief, charity and other forms of financial assistance which are dealt with under the Section 67 Grants-in-Aid Policy. The Mayoral Fund is also a limited source of charitable funding outlined in the City’s Relief and Charitable Allocations Policy.
